“We need a better website!”

Let’s say you’re a web developer.

A client comes to you and asks:

“Can you build us a better website?”

You look at their current website and it’s a hot mess.

Should you say:

“Yes, I can definitely build you something better than what you have.”

Heck no.

Why?

Because you don’t have enough information.

You don’t know what THEY don’t like about the current site. You only know what YOU don’t like about the current site.

You need to ask them questions to find out exactly what they want.

Here’s the thing...

Don’t start by asking them questions about colors or type or columns or layout or features or content or architecture or page count or load time or any of that.

Ask them what a home run would look like.

Yours,

—J
