It turns out there’s quite a bit of scientific research into the negative psychological effects of trading time for money.
Several alert readers sent me a link to an article from New York Magazine that referenced a paper, which in turn referenced 31 other papers on the subject. I emailed one of the authors and invited her to join me for an episode of Ditching Hourly:

Her papers have been published in leading journals such as Current Opinion in Psychology and Academy of Management Journal, and her works have also been covered in Harvard Business Review, Psychology Today, and New York magazine.
