Freebies

Sent by Jonathan Stark on February 13th, 2017

There are many people in our industry who advise that you should never give your thinking away for free.

I do not agree with these people.

The thing that I’m careful about giving away is my attention.

In other words, I’m happy to give away my general thinking on a subject, because it requires virtually none of my attention.

But if a client wants me to apply my expertise to their specific situation, it’s going to cost them because it requires a lot of my attention.

This is one reason why I’m against doing work on spec - it costs too much of my attention.
