Understand What You Do

My septuagenarian neighbor Bill is a prominent archaeologist. He has his Ph.D. from Harvard, was a professor at UC Berkeley for 30 years, and is now executive vice president and provost of an ivy league university.

When asked by my 5yo, “What do you do?” Bill replied, “I dig holes.”

I was reminded of one of my favorite quotes:

“If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough.”
–Albert Einstein

Bill understands what he does so well that he can explain it in one sentence in a way that makes sense to a 5yo.

Could you do the same?
