What is Platform Specialization?

Almost without exception, specializing is a very good thing to do if you want to increase your prices.

There are lots of ways to specialize (e.g., horizontal, vertical, demographic, psychographic, etc), but the one I want to focus on for the next few days is:

Platform Specialization

What is platform specialization?

Here’s the definition I use for platform specialization in my student glossary:

Platform Specialization—A subset of Horizontal Specialization that targets a tool or platform that your ideal buyer was involved in choosing. Specializing on Shopify, WordPress, or Salesforce are examples of Platform Specializations because your buyer almost certainly was involved in choosing the technology in question. Specializing on tools like Photoshop, JavaScript, or MySQL are not Platform Specializations because the buyer probably didn’t directly or consciously choose them.

Like all things, platform specialization has its own unique pros and cons.

I’ll cover those over the next few days, but first, I just wanted you to have a clear idea of what it was.

Stay tuned!

Yours,

—J
