How good should the bridge be?

Let’s say you’re a mechanical engineer.

I hire you to design a bridge for me.

Would you...

1. Run off and try to design the best bridge anyone’s ever seen?
2. Or would you first ask me what it was for?

If you answered 1, you almost certainly bill by the hour.

(And you almost certainly will come back with a design that doesn’t work for me.)
