Pencil or pen?

If you’re thinking about writing a book, deciding whether to use a pencil or pen (or Mac vs PC, or Scrivener vs Ulysses) is not worth thinking about.

It doesn’t really matter.

It’s a minor detail.

Start writing.

When faced with a big undertaking, it’s tempting to spend time researching all the little things involved. Tools, tactics, tips, tricks... you know the drill. You can start training for the marathon as soon as you find the perfect pair of socks.

We tell ourselves that once we have everything just so, we can finally get started. But really, that’s all a distraction. It’s procrastination. It’s fear paralyzing us with an obsession over minutia.

It’s the same in business.

I talk to people all the time who know they should start a mailing list or launch a podcast or publish a course, but then waste months (years!) trying to decide between Drip vs MailChimp. Or Simplecast vs Soundcloud. Or Udemy vs Teachable.

It doesn’t really matter.

It’s a minor detail.

Just start.

Yours,

—J
