Problems with specializing on a vertical market
Positioning guru Philip Morgan has recently started publishing daily (!) episodes of his show The Consulting Pipeline Podcast.
If you are an independent software developer who is interested in attracting more and better clients, you should listen to every episode. It’s concise, insightful, and entertaining. What could be better? 😊
Like me, Philip is a big fan of targeting a specific vertical market in certain situations. But like all tactics, vertical specialization has pros and cons.
In episode 36, Philip brings up two potential issues that can arise when targeting a specific vertical:
- What if clients are afraid you’ll share their secrets with their competitors?
- Can you reuse code from client to client?
