Butterbeer
In the Harry Potter attraction at Universal, they sell a non-alcoholic butterscotch flavored soda called butterbeer for $6.99.
(For the uninitiated, butterbeer is a drink that figured prominently in several of the HP books and movies)
I don’t like butterscotch and I don’t like soda, so the combination of the two sounds positively disgusting to me.
And yet when I was at the park, I bought one and drank it. As I expected... gross!
Why would I pay $6.99 for a soda that I knew I was going to hate?
Because of the story.
The reality is that I wasn’t paying for a drink. I probably wasn’t even thirsty. What I was paying for was an experience.
If you’re a Potter fan (which you obviously are if you’re at the park) you can’t not try butterbeer.
You don’t make the pilgrimage to Florida with the intention of answering “No” to the question, “Did you try the butterbeer?” to your friends when you get back home.
So sure, butterbeer is objectively nasty. But the experience of inserting yourself into the world that J. K. Rowling created is pure magic.
Well worth $6.99
Yours,
—J
