Just One Person

Relying on random referrals is scary.

But that doesn’t mean referrals are a bad way to get new clients.

It means randomness is a bad way to run a business.

Here’s a simple way to make referrals less random:

Every day, email one person in your network with something useful.

No pitch.

No “just checking in.”

No thinly disguised ask.

Just be nice and helpful and friendly and generous.

Also!

Make sure your email signature has one laser-focused sentence that tells them what kind of work to send your way.

Something like:

“I help $specificTypeOfBuyer solve $expensiveProblem without $painfulTradeoff.”

The daily outreach keeps you in touch with folks you enjoy connecting with and who like hearing from you.

And the signature gives them the tools they need to gladly connect you with your ideal clients, should the situation arise.

Yours,

—J
