Reader question re: What’s your stance on how to do marketing right?

A fellow list member asks:

Where in the ditchiverse can I look to read your authoritative stance on how to go about marketing?

That’s a great question!

Unfortunately, I don’t think I have a definitive article on my stance about how to go about marketing the “right” way.

(Maybe that should be my next book? 🤔 Anyways...)

Let’s start here:

Off the top of my head, my marketing philosophy is this:

“Help people you like get what they want for free at scale.”

For me, this looks less like hunting (e.g., cold calling, spamming contacts) and more like gardening (e.g., daily email, weekly podcast).

Why do I favor gardening over hunting?

Because I’m a big believer in the “consistency beats intensity” mantra.

Hunting is an occasional burst of intense activity that produces short-term results.

Gardening is a light amount of regular activity that produces long-term results.

They both work - and can work together - but personally, I much prefer gardening.
