Long time student, friend, and business coach Geraldine Carter wrote in to share her wisdom regarding niching down, both in her own business and from years of coaching CPAs.
Big thanks to G for sharing!
Everything from here on down is from Geraldine:
I’m so niche-passionate that I can no longer resist not piling on.
Niching is one of the best things a person can do for their business, for all the reasons that have been mentioned.
The problem is that it’s so scary and very hard to do alone.
It feels like certain business death.
Alice will wonder how she’ll ever find clients in a “smaller” market when finding clients in her larger market is already hard enough, she’ll wonder if her niche is niche-y enough, or If it’s too niche, if she’ll be bored, what if there’s a recession that hits her niche, what to put on her website, and what to say to existing non-niche clients who she fears are looking at her website (they’re not) and who she might alienate (she won’t).
Her unanswered questions run amok in her mind, and because she doesn’t have answers and cannot brave the uncertainty, she stays broad.
This is IF we assume that Alice can even spot what could be a great niche for her (she can’t).
(AMHIK: When it was suggested to me I should niche into “the money people” because “you can’t help but make spreadsheets and talk about money,” I thought they couldn’t be serious.
10 years later, I’m basically the world’s best business coach for single-owner CPAs who want to work sane hours without losing profit. Not because I’m truly the best one, but because I’m the only one.)
And because the riches are in the niches, NOT niching is ultra-expensive, like hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars of revenue never made expensive.
(I suspect the workshop is cheap by comparison.)
Niching is a little risky, sure, but the real risk is in remaining an all-purpose generalist.
Please, give yourself the gift of burrowing into a niche you love.
You won’t regret it.
