Know your worth?
There’s a phase that I hear a fair bit in the freelancer space:
“Know your worth!”
On the one hand, I applaud the intent of this rallying cry.
On the other hand, it doesn’t really make sense.
Quick reminder:
You can’t objectively know what your assistance is worth.
The only person who can say what your assistance is worth is the prospective buyer.
How do you figure out what your assistance is worth to the prospective buyer?
By having The Why Conversation with them to uncover their underlying motivations—i.e., hopes, dreams, worries, and fears.
This will tell you roughly what the overall initiative is worth (to the prospective buyer), which will give you the basis for setting a value price.
